Solis 20 kW S5 3-Phase Dual MPPT – DC Inverter

Overview
The Solis 20 kW S5 3-Phase Dual MPPT inverter is a high-performance grid-tie solution designed for three-phase installations where reliability, yield, and flexibility are key. With dual MPPT inputs, a wide DC voltage range and a rugged IP66-rated enclosure, this inverter is ideal for rooftop commercial systems, light industrial or large residential settings in South Africa.

Key Features & Specifications

  • Rated AC output power: 20 kW (with a short-term capability up to ~22 kW)

  • Two independent MPPT channels (Dual MPPT) enabling better string configuration flexibility.

  • Maximum conversion efficiency up to 98.7%.

  • Ultra low start-upt DC voltage: ~180 V DC.

  • Wide DC input voltage range: up to about 1,100 V DC maximum input voltage.

  • Supports a high DC/AC ratio (oversizing of PV array) ≥150% in many cases.

  • Built-in safety and protection:

    • Integrated AFCI (arc-fault circuit interrupter) on the DC side.

    • Surge protection (type II) both on DC and AC sides.

    • DC reverse polarity protection.

  • Ingress protection rating: IP66, suitable for outdoor installation with high resistance to dust and water ingress.

  • String input details: e.g., up to 16 A string current input per string for this model.

  • Certification: Rated for local South African grid-tie standards (for example, the model is listed as NRS 097-2-1 certified in South Africa).

Applications & Benefits

Applications

  • Three-phase commercial rooftop solar systems in schools, offices, apartment blocks.

  • Light industrial installations with solar arrays feeding into three-phase supply.

  • Large residential estates or multi-unit properties using three-phase supply requiring flexible string design.

Benefits

  • Dual MPPT allows you to divide your array into two independently tracked groups — great if you have multiple orientations/tilts or partial shading.

  • High efficiency means more of your solar input becomes usable AC output, improving yield and ROI.

  • The wide DC voltage range and high max input voltage allow you to use modern high‐voltage PV modules, reduce string count and cable losses.

  • Rugged IP66 build ensures durability in harsh environments (South African outdoor conditions, dust, high ambient temperatures).

  • Strong safety features (AFCI, surge protection) reduce risk and help with compliance for the grid connection.

  • Oversizing capability (DC array larger than AC rating) lets you capture more energy, especially in mornings/afternoons, improving overall output.

Installation & Considerations

  • Ensure your PV array design matches the inverter’s DC input limits: string voltage, string current, max DC power (e.g., this model supports up to ~30 kW DC array according to some spec listings).

  • For three-phase installations, confirm your grid supply, earthing, and local regulations. Also check your utility’s export requirements (e.g., export limiting may be required).

  • Use quality DC cabling, correct string fusing (if required), and proper AC connection per three-phase wiring standards.

  • Provide adequate ventilation and mounting space. Although the inverter is compact, heat dissipation is critical for long-term reliability.

  • Monitoring: Many listings mention compatibility with SolisCloud via WiFi/RS485/GPRS for remote performance monitoring and firmware updates.

  • Warranty: This model comes with a standard 5-year warranty, with options (in some markets) to extend.
